What Is a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV)?

The Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation is the official title granted to qualified business valuation professionals in Canada by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV). CBVs are mandated to deliver an accurate assessment of a company’s fair market value using established valuation methodologies—for purposes such as business sales and acquisitions, ownership transfers, litigation, or tax reorganizations.

Recognized Expertise

CBVs are finance professionals trained by the CICBV, the authoritative organization that sets national standards for business valuation in Canada. Their expertise is recognized by Canadian courts, where CBVs are frequently called upon to testify as expert witnesses in valuation-related matters.

The CICBV’s standards and practices are considered the industry benchmark and are recognized by numerous regulatory agencies across the country.

Rigorous Training

CBVs undergo advanced academic training, delivered jointly by York University and the CICBV. To obtain the designation, candidates must also pass the CICBV’s final exam and complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of practical experience in the field.

Most CBVs are also members of the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) profession.
